Let’s start 2025 strong with our first virtual learning (and optional tasting) experience on Wednesday, January 22 at 5pm Pacific/8pm Eastern. In 30 minutes, we’ll virtually travel to Portugal’s fascinating Douro Valley in order to learn more about the unique wines produced, mouthwatering regional cuisine and a few of my favorite restaurants, wow-worthy places to stay, and not-to-be-missed spots to visit.

Having visited the Douro Valley a few times, I’m excited to share so much of what I continue to find intriguing.

It's gingerbread season (although I love it all ye

It's gingerbread season (although I love it all year) so how about a wine or two for pairing?

Before deciding upon that delectable wine to complement the gingerbread, there are a few things to consider. Truth be told, the goal is to level up the flavors and enjoyment of each bite, right? To that end, how about sweet, highly aromatic Riesling or Sauternes to highlight the spices and sweetness in the cookie? Perhaps Moscato d’Asti with its vibrant acidity and bubbles can laser in on the cake’s rich texture. A few red wines such as Zinfandel or Grenache may be able to contrast the dessert’s intense spice notes.

Three of my favorite gingerbread cake pairings, all sent as samples, follow in the article along with my favorite recipe for gingerbread cakes from the Raleigh Tavern in Colonial Williamsburg. Enjoy!

When two brothers, Aldo and Paolo Rametta, joined

When two brothers, Aldo and Paolo Rametta, joined forces in the summer of 2020 to start a family business in the heart of their homeland, Romagna, their passion for wine and the region led them to success. Both were born in New Orleans, Louisiana and raised between the United States and Switzerland; their careers as entrepreneurs in the renewable energy sector afforded them more opportunities to travel extensively. Finally, in 2016, Poggio della Dogana was established and in 2020, Ronchi di Castelluccio was founded. The Rametta brothers and their families are now ensconced and thriving in their beloved Romagna.

During a recent virtual wine education and tasting experience (wines sent as samples) with Aldo Rametta, our group of journalists learned about the two locations, each of which exudes unique identities. This is an “amazing region for people and land – the coast, mountains, inland. We found the right opportunity,” began Aldo Rametta. Their goal is to “revive a myth of Italian oenology, taking up the challenge of these places with courage and innovative spirit.” @studiocru @ronchidicastelluccio @aldorametta

Ah-ha moments in wine are always my favorites. Whether I’m exploring wines from a new-to-me region, pairing a glass with an unusual dish (that works or doesn’t!), or finding a varietal of which I’m not too familiar, the discovery sustains my love for wine. Just the other night, two bottles (sent as samples) from Abbazia di Novacella located in Alto Adige’s Valle Isarco in northern Italy were opened. Let the fun begin!

What I found were wow-worthy white wines from one of Europe’s oldest working monasteries in operation for 900 years. Thoroughly enjoyed were 2023 Valle Isarco Sylvaner 2023 (Alto Adige) ($22) and 2023 Valle Isarco Kerner (Alto Adige) ($22), both of which should be on everyone’s table, then in the glass – I know they will continue to be on mine.

“At The Donum Estate, we’re looking for elegan

“At The Donum Estate, we’re looking for elegance and balance in everything,” stated Dan Fishman, Vice President of Winemaking and Vineyards at Donum, during a recent virtual tasting of four outstanding wines (sent as samples). His mission is to “make the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in California while preserving natural resources.”

Inspired by the incredible wines and the stories of the Estate I heard from Dan, I had the opportunity to personally visit The Donum Estate in mid-November. What I discovered was not only more exceptional examples of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but brilliant food pairings with each and one of the most breathtaking collections of art I’ve ever seen outside of a world class museum.

There’s no arguing that The Garagiste Festival is a place to discover new wines from up-and-coming winemakers who pour their own wines. We are able to learn fascinating stories, celebrate the wine industry with each sip and have a blast doing it all! This year, the non-profit Garagiste Festivals benefit the Cal Poly SLO Wine and Viticulture program. I’ll see you next year in Paso Robles for The Garagiste Festival 2025!
