Many years ago, I had the opportunity to sit down with two members of the Sogevinus Group, owners of Kopke Port Wines since 2006, at lunch in Chicago. As a Port lover, not only was the story of this iconic port house intriguing to me, the wines were exceptional. Fast forward to a few weeks ago when I had the opportunity to engage in a Q&A with Carla Tiago, Winemaker and Port Master Blender of Kopke Port Wines.
After reading her story, I hope that you’re just as intrigued with Carla as I have been, then feel compelled to seek Kopke Port wines for a better understanding of this acclaimed Port house. (Please note that I will review their four port wines (sent as samples) in a soon-to-be-published piece.)

First, what is the history of Kopke?
CT: Founded in 1638, Kopke is the oldest Port wine house, established even before the demarcation of the Douro wine region. With nearly four centuries of history, Kopke has built a legacy of producing exceptional wines and ports, known for their heritage and artisanal craftsmanship.
When did you get involved in viticulture in the Douro Valley?
CT: My journey in viticulture began in 2005 during my first harvest in the Douro region. Born in Torre de Moncorvo, in the heart of Douro Superior, I’ve always been deeply connected to this unique wine-growing region.
Please share your wine journey prior to your current position?
CT: My wine journey started with a degree in Biochemistry, which provided me with a strong scientific foundation. I first worked in the laboratory during the 2005 harvest and joined Sogevinus in 2007 as part of the enology team at Quinta de São Luiz, focusing on Douro DOC wines. In 2012, I expanded my expertise to Port wine production at Vila Nova de Gaia, which eventually led to my current position as Port Master Blender.
What is your current position at Kopke?
CT: Since 2022, I have been the winemaker and a Port Master Blender for all Kopke Port Wines. My job involves overseeing the entire process from winemaking to bottling of all Kopke’s port wines. Working directly with Carlos Alves, the director of oenology and viticulture and the company’s longest-serving Port Master Blender, our mission is to ensure that all the blends we create, all the wines we take care, all the ports we bottle meet the exceptional quality standards for which we are known.
Where are the Kopke vineyards? Does Kopke source grapes, or are they all estate-grown?
CT: Kopke’s vineyards are located in prime areas of the Douro Valley, primarily at Quinta de São Luiz. While we prioritize estate-grown grapes to maintain quality and control, we also source grapes from long-standing partner growers who share our commitment to excellence.
How do the soil, aspect of the vineyards, and climate affect the flavor profile of the wines?
CT: The Douro Valley is defined by its schist soils, steep terraces, and varied microclimates. These factors create a unique environment for grape growing, producing concentrated and expressive wines. The balance of sun exposure, altitude, and soil composition directly influences the complexity, structure, and aromatic profile of our wines.

What would you say is the philosophy in winemaking at Kopke?

How widely are Kopke Ports distributed? What are the price points of the wines you sent to me?
CT: Kopke Ports are distributed globally, with a strong presence in Europe, North America, and Asia. Prices vary depending on the style and aging of the Port. For example, our Colheita Ports, which are single-harvest tawnies, typically range from $35 to $70, depending on their age.
When you’re not working at Kopke, what are your passions?
CT: Outside of work, I enjoy spending time in the Douro region, exploring its beauty, and participating as a judge at international wine competitions. I also love traveling and learning about different cultures and spending time with family and friends.
Is there anything else you’d like to share about Kopke, the Port, Sogevinus, or yourself?
CT: Kopke is more than a wine brand; it’s a legacy of excellence that spans nearly 400 years. At Sogevinus, our dedication to preserving this heritage while innovating for the future drives everything we do. Personally, I am honored to contribute to this remarkable story, ensuring that each bottle of Kopke Port reflects the soul of the Douro Valley.
