Who has not heard of or tasted wines from Napa Valleys’ Cakebread Cellars founded in 1972 by Dolores and Jack Cakebread? Its storied history and exceptional wines not only reflect the character of the founders but the quality of their estate vineyards from Carneros to Mendocino County. Now, this historic winery is revamping its classic image with a new winemaker, Niki Williams, who pledges to maintain Cakebread’s signature style while putting her own stamp on the wines.
But there’s more. Cakebread Cellars has also launched its sister brand, Bezel Wines with the intention to introduce Cakebread aficionados to the Paso Robles and Edna Valley AVAs with food friendly, easy-drinking wines that burst with charisma.
Bezel winemaker Jane Dunkley is the star behind these delicious and affordable wines. From her home of Australia to Portugal, Italy and now the Central Coast of California, Jane “lives, works and breathes in the same spectacular spots as the grapes she crushes for Bezel.” The Central Coast of California runs along the Pacific coast from the Santa Cruz Mountains in the north to Santa Barbara in the south. All fruit for Bezel Wines is sourced from premium vineyards in Edna Valley and Paso Robles. Many hidden vineyard gems can be found in Edna Valley AVA located immediately southeast of the city of San Luis Obispo. Cool, moist winds sweep up the Edna Valley from the coast offering a much cooler climate that what is found inland. Notable vineyards are found in Paso Robles AVA, lauded for its diverse topography, meso-climates, soils, winemaking styles and over 60 different vinifera grapes. With 11 sub-AVAs, there is a wine and wine style for everyone.
Sent to me as samples, were three Bezel wines, each a delight to sip on its own or with meals. From what I tasted, Bezel wines are exactly on point with Cakebread’s mission to produce fruit forward, dynamic, approachable wines. Available at selected restaurants (I’ve seen them on wine lists) or online, each is highly recommended.
2021 Bezel Chardonnay Edna Valley ($25), oaked for 8 months in French oak, burst with notes of citrus, lemon and salinity on the nose. Bright, zesty and balanced, the round mouthfeel offered flavors of more citrus, pineapple, spice and vanilla and was a lovely complement to roast chicken with herbs and grilled vegetables. At the price of $25, a bottle should always be chilled and ready to share with friends.
An “on the mark” pairing with butternut squash ravioli blanketed with a light cheese sauce, 2021 Bezel Pinot Noir Edna Valley ($30) sang. Boasting spice, cherries, blackberries, cola and bright minerality on both nose and palate, the lingering finish suggested notes of fruit and spice. Fresh with fresh acidity and moderate tannic structure, this Pinot Noir was aged for 8 months in French oak. Excellent.
2021 Bezel Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles ($30) could easily stand up in a blind tasting among more pricey Paso Robles Cabernets. Rich blackberries, baking spice, chocolate, cola, bay leaves and dark fruit compote notes were bright and rich. On a foundation of firm tannins and vibrant acidity, enjoy this balanced Cabernet with a steak from the grill, juicy burgers, or s’mores by the fire pit.
Cheers! ~ Cindy
