How can we find a high-quality Pinot Grigio from Italy that we’ll want to pour again and again? A recommendation from a friend? An online or print review from an expert that you may or not know? The consultant at your neighborhood wine shop? Perhaps. The most important way to verify quality, though, is right on the neck of the bottle: a seal from Pinot Grigio delle Venezie DOC. This seal indicates that the Pinot Grigio delle Venezie is certified as not only the highest quality, but is a gateway to wonderful experiences. Are you ready for this? Let’s explore Pinot Grigio delle Venezie DOC.

The logo of the Consorzio DOC delle Venezie offers clues to the region and ultimately what’s in the bottle. Lines represent the three regions of production: Veneto (the lowlands), Friuli-Venezie Giulia (the hills) and the Autonomous Province of Trento (the mountains). Surrounding the seal are 12 points that are symbols of the provinces in the production area of the DOC.

“Protecting, enhancing and promoting Pinot Grigio are the objectives of the Consorzio DOC delle Venezie in order to guarantee and certify the quality and origin” of the wines.

Pinot Grigio delle Venezie DOC Includes Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Trento

The Pinot Grigio delle Venezie appellation represents the first Italian multiregional DOC created in order to join Pinot Grigio producers throughout three regions. Triveneto (or Tre Venezie) covers almost 28 thousand hectares of vineyards throughout the entire northeastern area of Italy and includes Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Trento. Across these regions, Pinot Grigio, a cool climate grape, thrives.

Pinot Grigio delle Venezie is synonymous with northeast Italy, of course, with 85% of the country’s production and 43% of the world’s production. The territory is nestled against the “Alpine arc” or amphitheater in the north which protects the vast production area from cold currents flowing from the north and northeast. From the Dolomites to the north to Lake Garda to the Lagoon of Venice to the Adriatic Sea and stunning hills of Collio, diverse terroir and a unique climate are dominant.

Lake Garda

The entire region is crossed by rivers such as the Po, Adige, Tagliamento, Brento, Isonzo and others that offer fresh, well drained and mineral-rich calcareous, gravel and sandy soils. A combination of water and mountains help create a moderate climate that’s cool and breezy thanks to the winds blowing from Lake Garda and a wide diurnal shift of temperature.

Triveneto is the real homeland of Pinot Grigio delle Venezie, due to the perfect microclimate within the soil that blends the effects of the area’s temperature, water content and aeration. A result is that grapes cultivated in the region are concentrated with high acidity and minerality, characteristics of this remarkable region.

Why Choose Pinot Grigio delle Venezie DOC?

Thanks to such a special position offering diverse terroir, Pinot Grigio delle Venezie reflects the different micro-areas in which it is cultivated with unique aromas and flavors. Versatile, easy-drinking and fresh, Pinot Grigio from delle Venezie DOC is the one to seek when you want to taste the difference.

Depending on where the grapes are grown within the DOC, primary fruit flavors may be lime, lemon, pear, white nectarine, apple and herbs. The Pinot Grigio delle Venezie may offer subtle notes of honey, florals such as honeysuckle, tart almonds, salinity, minerality and of course, vibrant acidity. Mouthwatering!
