I’m off to Douro in Portugal from Thursday, September 23 through Saturday, September 25 so pack your virtual travel bag and join me! What is especially enticing is that this journey is just as much about museums, monuments, villages and vistas as it is about the area’s food and wine culture.
During the intense three days in the region, I’ll be on a sailboat on the Douro River mesmerized by the sunset, checking out rock engravings via a 4×4 vehicle, tasting traditional and non-traditional foods, walking through small villages, having a picnic at the beach and so much more. The trip ends with our group’s participation in Harvest Day in the wine village of Favaios!
Northern Portugal is one of the most beautiful regions to visit. Inspiring panoramic vistas of the Atlantic Ocean beset the landscape accompanied by mountains and rivers. New discoveries in charming villages and towns are always present. Porto, the heartbeat of North Portugal, should be on everyone’s short list as the perfect place to begin a memorable journey into the rich history, classic and modern cuisine, and unique wines of the region. In fact, the city’s historic center — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is replete with meandering streets, façade-tiled homes and stunning views of the Douro River. I think we can all agree that when the day is finished, it’s time to pour a glass of wine and watch the sunset slowly setting over the Atlantic ocean, Douro River or vineyards.
Are you already inspired to plan your own trip to Portugal? I’ve been revisiting some previous articles I’ve written about Douro where food, wine and culture are interwoven. You may want to check them out, too…
