Busting the myth that wines from Bordeaux are too expensive to be accessible is Diane Flamand, long-time winemaker for the Légende label at Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite). During a recent virtual tasting with Flamand and members of the wine trade and media, it was crystal clear that each wine in the portfolio is easy drinking, easy to recognize and approachable with elements of finesse, sophistication and balance in each sip. Yet, Diane Flamand gives “the same care and attention to detail as applied to the Grand Vins.” My takeaway? I can’t think of a better introduction to wines from Bordeaux than those I tasted (sent as samples) from Légende.

Beginning in the 1990s, the decision was made by those at Domaines Barons de Rothschild (DBR) to offer consumers a selection of wines from five different appellations of Bordeaux. Yet, the name of the new label had to reflect the superlative reputation of the Rothschild family, linked to the vineyards of Bordeaux since 1868, and rich cultural heritage of Chateau Lafite. It was decided that “Légende” could encompass all of that and more – it could “live up to the expectations.” It does.

The Pauillac and Médoc wines are produced from DBR (Lafite)’s own vineyards and from neighboring vineyards. For the Bordeaux appellations, the technical team selects the terroirs and supervises the vinification of the grapes from partner suppliers. The Bordeaux Rouge and Blanc are made from selections of the finest production in the Entre-Deux-Mers region. As early as possible after fermentation, the DBR (Lafite) team selects the best batches of wine after successive blind tastings, enabling them not only to ensure top quality wine but also to control each stage of the winemaking and ageing. The aim, quite simply, is to produce excellent wines, which truly reflect the DBR (Lafite) house style. Taub Family Selections

The wines I tasted (sent as samples) exuded a true expression of terroir and fruit along with the elegance and freshness of Bordeaux. None sacrificed quality for a reasonable price. When you discover these wines for yourself, it will be easy to enjoy a glass (or two) any day of the week.

Our first wine was Légende Bordeaux Blanc 2019 ($19) was a lip-smacking blend of 85% Sauvignon Blanc and 15% Semillon cultivated in the Entre-Deux-Mers region, one of the largest appellations in Bordeaux and one that produces 90% of its white wines. Precise aromas and flavors of citrus, stone fruit and white flowers in the glass make a fresh salad, raw oysters or a favorite seafood dish that much more delicious.

Cabernet Sauvignon is the signature grape of Domaines Barons de Rothschild. This affordable example, Légende Bordeaux Rouge 2017 ($19), was a lovely balance between fruit, acidity, tannins and alcohol. On the nose, notes of herbs, dried red berries, pomegranate and hint of blueberries led to flavors of black pepper, red fruit, earth and spice. You’re planning an evening of burgers from the grill and a Netflix binge? Pour this wine!

Diane Flamand’s goal in crafting the Légende Saint Emilion 2016 ($40) was to strike a balance between oak notes and flavor. Of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, aromas of black cherries, earth, green pepper, chocolate and toast were enticing. The palate offered notes of spice, lush fruit, cola, confit, cherries and vanilla framed with moderate acidity and soft tannins. Memorable pairings to consider are seared duck, a favorite pasta, grilled chicken, or everyone’s favorite, pizza…

Of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot is Légende Medoc 2016 ($26). Notes of blueberries, currants, blackberries, ripe plums and red berries wafted from the glass of this delightful wine. Framed with firm tannins and moderate acidity, notes of spice, black pepper, mocha, coffee and purple fruit on the palate were expressive. Grilled beef or strong cheeses are delicious accompaniments to a generous pour of this lush wine.

Classic from the first sip to the last, was Légende Pauillac 2016 ($54) of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot cultivated in two estate vineyards. Spice, black pepper, cedar, cassis, mint, vanilla and plenty of red and black fruit on the nose and palate are just a few of the descriptors for this special and oh-so-easy drinking wine. Although it’s made to open now, Légende Pauillac has the ability to age 10-15 more years, thanks to plenty of structure and complexity.

Cheers! ~ Cindy
