When a crisis occurs, no matter the reason, groups of generous, caring people seem to gather as one. During the last few weeks those of us in all aspects of the wine industry are donating funds to relevant causes, volunteering our time to those in need and assisting others in creative ways. The amount of support to those who have lost loved ones, jobs, livelihoods and confidence continues to overwhelm.
Just a few days ago, I had the pleasure to talk with two people who are working to make a difference in the world of wine. Jayme Henderson, owner and winemaker at The Storm Cellar in Colorado, and Les Makepeace of My Wine List are providing consumers online access to notable wineries on their new site, My New Cellar. Trust me, the website and their concept are worth checking out.
“Independent wineries have essentially seen their tasting room and restaurant sales channels go to zero from the recent stay-at-home orders,” says Les Makepeace. “Even though tasting rooms are closed, wineries can still ship you wine—and that’s the best method to help them increase revenue during this difficult time. The wine industry, and so many others, are scrambling to stay afloat. Whatever we can do to help would greatly benefit this thriving and creative community.”
I was thrilled to discover some of my favorite wineries offering discounts at My New Cellar. In fact, I’ve actually visited the beautiful properties or tasting rooms of Anthony Road in the Finger Lakes, Smith Story Wine Cellars in Anderson Valley and Smith-Madrone in St. Helena. After swirls and sips of wines from Duckhorn Portfolio, Gratus Vineyards, Inman Family Wines, Lieb Cellars and Backpack Wine, I can recommend these outstanding producers, too. Click here for more.
