Bordeaux. Even the mention of the word brings to mind the iconic region that produces exceptional wine… often at a budget-breaking, mind-numbing cost. But wait! Plenty of producers are offering affordable and delicious Bordeaux wines – finally! My most recent tasting of wines that satisfied the “frugal Bordeaux winelover” in me was from the Légende brand (sent as samples). The bonus is that Légende wines are offered by one of the most prestigious producers of the region: Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite). But were the wines worthy of the name with which they are associated?
“It all started in the nineties. We wanted to offer our consumers a discovery of the different terroirs and tastes of Bordeaux. A name had to be found. A name that could live up to the expectation. A hint to the Rothschild family and the rich history of Château Lafite. A légende was born”.
The results of this noble endeavor are approachable and accessible wines that don’t sacrifice quality for a reasonable price. In essence, they beg to be opened and enjoyed every day of the week. I found the selections from five different appellations in Bordeaux impeccably balanced with a style that gives a nod to both tradition and innovation. Crafted by Diane Flamand, long-time Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) winemaker, her breadth of experience and talent for winemaking ring true with each sip.
Légende Bordeaux Blanc 2016 ($17.99) – This enticing wine of 50% Sauvignon Blanc, 40% Sémillon, and 10% Sauvignon Gris is from Entre-Deaux-Mers, one of the largest appellations in Bordeaux and one that produces more than 90% of its white wines. Refreshing aromas of honey, lemon, citrus, and stone fruit were a lovely entry to this easy drinking wine! On the crisp and dry palate, mouthwatering acidity and notes of apricot, more stone fruit, and juicy, exotic fruit paved the path to a lipsmacking finish. This lively Bordeaux Blanc is just as comfortable shared with your best friend on the back porch as it is paired with a special garden salad or light fish dish.
Légende Bordeaux 2016 ($17.99) – The vintage year 2016 was one that produced wines of quality thanks to surprisingly optimal weather conditions. This well priced example of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot is no exception. On the nose, I discovered bright cherries, ripe strawberries, raspberries, vanilla, and… was that dried currants, too? The palate burst with flavor thanks to an abundance of red fruit, wood, and vanilla framed by mouthwatering acidity and smooth tannins. Ever so balanced, the fruit forward finish was quite satisfying. Pair with burgers, tomato-based pasta dishes, or a roasted pork tenderloin for a taste sensation you’ll love.
Légende Médoc 2015 ($26.99) – Who says you can’t find beautiful Bordeaux at an affordable price? Not me! This luscious example of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot from the Medoc may be just what you’re looking for. Rich red fruit, raspberries, cherries, red currants, anise, spice, and a touch of earth wafted from my glass upon opening. On the palate, bright acidity and supple tannins were the foundation to a full-bodied and balanced wine that exuded notes of red fruit, tangy spice, and earth. The finish was bold and spicy. Consider complementing grilled beef and strong cheeses with this memorable wine.
Légende Saint-Emilion 2015 ($44.99) – I’m a fervent fan of wines from beautiful Saint-Emilion, located on the Right Bank of Bordeaux. Consisting of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, this wine had me at the first whiff! Aromas of dark cherries, plums, exotic spice, and herbs were an intriguing entry. On the well-rounded palate, vibrant acidity and velvet-like tannins enveloped notes of juicy red fruit, blueberries, dark plums, and vanilla. Lingering and fresh, the finish was “Ahhhhh…” worthy. Pair with your favorite roasted meats, a rich risotto, or grilled fish with a tasty sauce.
Légende Pauillac 2014 ($54.99) – What’s not to love about this notable wine from Pauillac, another legendary location for extraordinary wines? Comprised of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot, aromas of dark red fruit, cedar, eucalyptus, vanilla, oak, and exotic spice were intriguing and I craved these aromas as much as I did what was in the glass! With the precise balance between bright acidity and supple tannins, I discovered flavors of red fruit, a hint of earth and spice, black pepper, and anise. With each sip, I was in Bordeaux heaven and the label, an illustration of the gate to Lafite, was proof! Savor each sip of the Légende Pauillac with whatever or whomever it’s paired.
Did the Légende wines live up to my expectations? Of course. Each was a unique and flavorful guide to the beauty of Bordeaux at a reasonable price. With Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) name on each label, I expected nothing less.
