On occasion I’m invited to accompany my husband to a business dinner with a few of his out of town colleagues. At first I thought my presence was appreciated because of my sparkling personality, brilliant sense of style (wink here), and cutting edge choices of restaurants. But now I’m beginning to think that it’s because I always bring a bottle of (really good) wine. There are a few quite knowledgeable wine lovers in the group and prior to the last dinner, one remarked, “Is Cindy going to bring some wine?” My husband shared that comment with me and naturally I said “Of course!” already knowing which bottle to bring: Cornerstone Cellars 2011 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon.
Our group dined al fresco at Adelle’s, a small restaurant in Wheaton, Illinois that offers a unique, eclectic mix of American fare made “from scratch” and served with panache. Although their wine list is excellent, I wanted to share the bottle from Cornerstone Cellars with those who would appreciate its nuances. And of course I craved the opportunity to talk about this winery, one of my favorites, because it’s notable for producing wines of consistency and quality.
According to Craig Camp, Managing Partner, “Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon has been our true cornerstone wine of Cornerstone Cellars since our first vintage in 1991.” The Ink Grade Vineyard on Howell Mountain, where the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are grown, sits at an elevation of 1800 feet with steep slopes and volcanic tufa soils. A small amount of Merlot from Howell Mountain and Cabernet Franc from the Coombsville Appellation were added to enhance body and complexity. Although the 2011 vintage provided plenty of challenges to winemakers and viticulturists, thanks to the ups and downs of the weather, Craig Camp and his team successfully produced this beautiful Cabernet Sauvignon which is yet another example of their skill and creativity.
The Cornerstone Cellars 2011 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon was opened by our server, left to breathe, poured, then swirled. Intense aromas of cherries, plums, blueberries, lavender, and sweet spice leapt from the glass prompting one diner to remark that he could inhale the deep aromas all night and be perfectly satisfied! On the palate, smooth was the word everyone used, from the flavors of deep red fruits, juicy blueberries, licorice and creamy chocolate to the integrated tannins lifted with bright acidity to the long, mesmerizing finish. This rich, elegant wine was outstanding and it was a sad moment indeed when the last glass was poured. Cost is $80.
It looks like I have secured my place at these business dinners…as long as I attend with a bottle of Cornerstone Cellars wine!
Cheers! ~ Cindy
