It’s that time of year when throughout the Internet you are reading more than your plate can handle with regards to wine pairings for appetizers, burgers, and more which are deemed perfect for that Super Bowl party you’ll be attending or hosting. Nothing says Big Game like some chicken wings, spinach dip, smoked anything, and a few nachos smothered with cheese yet I know there are more creative recipes being tested right now! However, the host may appreciate a bottle of wine (or two!) to help them celebrate a win or deal with the shock of an unpredicted loss. The two suggestions, one white and one red, I have to share with you this week will garner a cheer from host and guests alike while sure to soothe the soul of a disappointed football fan. And with the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks, I just had to suggest these Super Bowl wine choices from their home states!
Which one is your winner?
**Karma Vineyards 2010 Griesling – If you’re a Seattle fan, you may want some good karma to follow the team. And you can’t do it alone! A bottle of wine from Karma Vineyards in Lake Chelan, Washington may be the answer. I have visited this gorgeous winery located on a bluff overlooking the river. It’s the region’s first Methode Champenoise house and although they are bringing sparkling to the area, still wines are produced, too. During lunch at the winery, I enjoyed their Griesling which was 55% Riesling and 44% Gewurtztraminer. Aged for fourteen months in French oak, the aromas were spicy and floral with citrus zest, mango, honey, and stoned fruit on the palate. I’m feeling the karma right now…And for $22, you and the Seattle fans may, too!
**Creekside Cellars NV Rosso – Very close to Denver, Creekside Cellars in Evergreen, Colorado is doing wine right thanks to Winemaker, Michelle Cleveland. I had the pleasure of visiting the winery and restaurant this past summer, sat on the breezy deck while listening to a babbling creek, and enjoyed a delicious lunch paired with a variety of wines. A tour of this small, boutique winery and a taste from the barrel helped make the rest of the day go even better! Among other wines, I thought the non-vintage Rosso, a Bordeaux and Rhone blend consisting of 50% Mourvedre, 42% Cinsault, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 3% Syrah pairs well with pizza and pasta which just may be the foundation of most Super Bowl party game plans. The richness of oak and black cherries along with tobacco notes led to a successful finish with no time outs. Will this $22 Rosso be your winner? Pass the bottle!!
Cheers to the perfect party wines for your host! Enjoy the game! ~ Cindy
