It’s almost Friday and you’re already thinking about your weekend plans and perhaps which wines to purchase. For the past several weeks, I have posted a tapas recipe paired with wine from Spain’s Region of Murcia, an area to which I travelled in June. Now that the series is completed, I’m returning to my weekly offerings of two wine recommendations, one white and one red, for your weekend choices. And the fantastic point is that both wines this week are not only fantastic but under $20. What better way to begin the weekend than with these wonderful selections!
The wines I’m suggesting were sent to me as samples and both represent a much appreciated quality to price ratio (QPR) which we all love! Enjoy!
You may have already read my article about South Africa’s Silkbush Mountain Vineyard and my change-your-mind-about-Pinotage review of their surprising, interesting wine, the 2009 Lions Drift! Recently, I was sent a bottle of their Viognier, one of my favorite varietals thanks to its aromatics and flavor profile. But a Viognier from South Africa? Knowing how much impact terroir has on a wine, I couldn’t wait to give it a try… And what about that terroir? The wine farm at Silkbush is 341 total mountain acres in Breedekloof in the Western Cape. Sloped hillsides up to 2100 feet above sea level, rocky soils, plenty of pure water, and cool nights have a huge impact on wines produced. In fact, the cooler temperatures in the mountainous areas away from Cape Town help develop lovely Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and yes, this Viognier. With Bennie Wannenberg, head winemaker who has more than a few accolades for his prize winning wines, how could this choice not be a stunner?? For more information about Silkbush including their interesting history and development, please check out their website!
When I poured that first glass of Viognier 2012, I found a clear, pale gold color with pure aromas of citrus, honeysuckle, and fresh melon. The crisp acidity and more citrus notes were full, fresh, and bright and I loved the creamy and soft mouthfeel of this Viognier. Its full body and long finish were just what I craved on a warm, early autumn evening and you can enjoy this now or cellar it for up to five years (but who wants to do that??)! The cost for this unique and luscious wine from South Africa is $16.99. You may order the Viognier online at www.cape-ardor.com with shipping from California. Distributors are present in California, Arkansas, and Florida with distribution in other states pending.
NAPA by N.A.P.A. Michael’s Red
Since 1883 the Scotto Family has been in the winemaking business and production continues with over thirty brands mostly from Lodi and Amador Counties in California. Now, we can find Scotto Cellars in Napa Valley with Anthony Scotto III at the helm and Jason Ball, seasoned winemaker, working their magic in a high tech production facility. The wine I loved is the first release from their Napa location and if it’s any indication of what’s to come, I’m in! In fact, NAPA by N.A.P.A. Michael’s Red, represents the names of the five siblings which are part of this fifth generation of winemakers: Natalie, Anthony, Paul, Anne and Michael who is the newest member of the organization. Congratulations!
Interestingly, the wine is comprised of five varietals from four vintages: 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2009 Sangiovese, 2009 Barbera, 2010 Syrah, 2008 Merlot, and 2007 Merlot! Garnet in the glass with aromas of sweet spice, cherries, biscuit, and a splash of pomegranate, I knew this wine was going to be special and…delectable! On the palate, a burst of red juicy cherries and spice took center stage. The balance of Michael’s Red was obvious with its gentle tannins and just-enough acidity along with fruit notes and 13.9% alcohol. With a nice long finish, consider this new release from Scotto Cellars a keeper! Easily found in your local wine shop, the price is so right at $20. and I have already recommended it to perfect strangers in the wine store who I found pondering which wine to purchase…and they picked up a few bottles!
Cheers to delicious wine! ~ Cindy
