Thanks to an opportunity (complimentary for review purposes) to order six wines from Elden Selections, a Burgundy-only online wine store, I’m now a fan. Who knew that so many premium wines from one of my favorite regions can be purchased with a few clicks and delivered to my front door?
That’s right. Selected wines from Burgundy, that iconic French wine region boasting 3500 domaines, 100 appellations and more than 1200 climats, have been specially chosen for the fortunate wine lover who may be daunted by the sheer number of the region’s producers and the often budget-busting prices. Eleanor Garvin and Dennis Sherman, founders of Elden Wine Selections in 1992, have worked and lived in Burgundy for over 30 years. They have plenty of experience and insider information to vet each producer and wine cultivated in a range of appellations. The end result is that we’re offered small production wines, many of which we can’t find elsewhere, that exude outstanding quality at prices we can afford.
The wines I chose were pre-selected for the experience and I’ve been delighted with each. Sent as samples were white wines, Chateau Cary Potet, Montagny 1er Cru ‘Les Burnins’ 2016 ($42), Jean Dauvissat Père et Fils, Chablis 2016 ($35), Domaine Jean Jacques-Girard, Savigny les Beaune 2017 ($49) and red wines, Domaine De Suremain, Château de Monthelie 2014 ($46), Domaine Jean Fery, Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru ‘Les Vergelesses’ 2016 ($59), Domaine Mouton, Givry 1er Cru ‘Clos Jus’ 2015 ($46). Elegance, expression of fruit and nuances of the winemaker were evident in each sip and my reviews may be found here.
While looking at the array of choices on the site, I was thrilled to see a selection, Les Carrieres, from Paul-Henri Thillardon in Beaujolais. About a year ago, I sat down for a conversation and tasting with this innovative winemaker at his winery during my work trip to the region. I’m happy to see that the Shermans did the same and I recommend his exceptional wine, too.
I encourage you to give Elden Selections a try. It’s not a wine club. Rather, customers choose the wine, (whether it’s one bottle or a case of two) and select a delivery date that fits your schedule. There’s no commitment and the Shermans accept payment in cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin, Ethereum and Bytecoin), too!
Elden Selections is a brilliant concept from people I now trust after tasting the extraordinary wines sent. Discover what the Shermans consider their “irreplaceable children” and savor the personality of Burgundy in your glass.
Cheers! ~ Cindy
